Pit Golf Links, The

How is the course?:
The course opened in 1985. This shotmaker's course was formerly a sand quarry. It has very narrow fairways and well-manicured greens that are fast, and several of them are island greens. Water hazards come into play on five holes, including #12, a 167-yard, par 3, featuring an island green. Some holes were built with the classical Pinehurst style in mind, featuring rolling fairways bordered by pine trees. "Golf Digest" ranked it 47th among the "Top 75 Public Courses" for 1990. "GOLF Magazine" ranked hole #8, a 480-yard, par 5, as "One of the Best 50 Golf Holes in America" that are open to the public." "Golf Digest" voted hole #4, a 232-yard, par 3, as one of "The Best 18 Holes You Can Play" for 1997. This hole has no bunkers but tree trunks and pine needles are perched on surrounding mounds, so there are plenty of hazards for the errant tee shot to encounter. Golf carts are required on weekends. Aberdeen Ridge Golf Links

How is the course?:
Aberdeen Ridge Golf Links is a par 3 track located a short drive south of Pinehurst, and opened for play September 2001. Planned to eventually include a full 18-holes, architect/owner/pro Scott Shepherd placed the existing "back nine" of this course along a ridge. The resulting elevation changes of 50 to 70 feet provide for some dramatic shots. The rolling fairways are generally open, and play to large, undulating greens, averaging 4,000 to 7,000 square feet. The Donald Ross inspired greens require an accurate approach shot in order to hold them. Aberdeen Ridge plays from 850 to 1,500-yards and offers three sets of tees to accommodate a variety of handicaps. There are four forced carries over water, and the course is not heavily bunkered.
