Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club

Course description:
The course was built in 1995. The resort opened nine new holes in the summer of 1998, giving it three nine hole courses that are played in three eighteen hole combinations. The new nine, the Cypress Course, is just south of the original holes and borders wetlands. Six holes run east and west and three run north and south. There are six lakes on the new nine holes and the newest nine maintains the same flavor of the original eighteen course. However, it has more of an inland feel because of the hardwoods on the land, as opposed to the pines that are featured on the original holes. The original course, the Marsh/Lakes, was cut out of the natural woodlands and wetlands. Water hazards, in the form of twenty-three lakes, come into play frequently. This combination is extremely scenic because it is bordered on two sides by the Bon Secour Wildlife Preserve. This is a golfer-friendly course because the landing areas in the fairways are quite large. The fairways are wide open, and the large greens are fast. One hole, offering a spectacular view, plays alongside Mobile Bay. The signature hole is #2 on the Marsh nine, a 628-yard, par 5, with four lakes coming into play. The Emerald Coast Tour was held here in December of 1996. Walking is permitted during the twilight hours on weekdays. Earl Stone designed the course. This course has 54 holes. The course includes waterhazards. And has 41-50 sandbunkers.

Hiwan Golf Club

What is the course like?:
The course opened in 1962. This course, built on mountainous terrain, was the site of the Colorado Open for about thirty years. The course has greens that are deceivingly difficult to read. Several changes in elevation could cause uneven lies. The rough is not severe, but stray shots will find tree problems on most holes. This is not a difficult course from tee to green, but these tricky greens will even keep the pros from scoring too low. Club personnel say that morning play is best because there are many afternoon thunderstorms. There are sand bunkers protecting almost every hole, except holes #9 and #18. Water hazards (ponds) come into play on holes #7 and #12. "Golf Digest" rated this as the 15th "Best in State" course for 1995-96, and the 9th best for 1997-98. Tee times are only reserved seven days in advance for weekdays. Perry Maxwell designed the course. This course has 18 holes. The course includes waterhazards. And has 41-50 sandbunkers.
